How does this medicine work?
Vedolizumab is an anti-adhesion antibody that bind to molecules that help white blood cells stick to the blood vessel walls and leave the bloodstream to cause inflammation in the gut. When anti-adhesion antibodies (vedolizumab) are bound to gut, this prevents the white blood cells from entering the gut to cause inflammation. Anti-adhesion medicines are immunosuppressive medicines. This means that they partially block an action of the immune system, but do not completely it turn off. While there are some side effects, most people do not get more infections when they start taking these medicines. Vedolizumab may take up to 14 weeks before it shows evidence of therapeutic benefits.
